Examining the concept of consecration through the medium of installation art, focusing on the sociocultural significance of rice in the Indonesian context. By borrowing signs from The Last Supper (1495-1498), this work appropriates iconic elements from the paintings while incorporating the author's experience in the phenomenon of rice glorification in Indonesia. Appropriation in this context is not theft, appropriation includes an understanding of the cultural significance of the borrowed elements (Edeline & Klinkenberg, 2015). The consecration of art (Danto, 1992) is the basis that allows rice to have other values beyond the object itself. This theory also serves as a basis for explaining the relationship between the phenomena of consecration of rice, consecration of works of art, and the Eucharist. By using found objects and their materiality, this installation is the author's response to the system that allows people to depend on rice as a cultural and political commodity, as well as the phenomenon of its glorification. text |

This final work departs from observations between the phenomena of rice
glorification and consecration. Examining the concept of consecration through the
medium of installation art, focusing on the sociocultural significance of rice in the
Indonesian context. By borrowing signs from The Last Supper (1495-1498), this
work appropriates iconic elements from the paintings while incorporating the
author's experience in the phenomenon of rice glorification in Indonesia.
Appropriation in this context is not theft, appropriation includes an understanding
of the cultural significance of the borrowed elements (Edeline & Klinkenberg,
2015). The consecration of art (Danto, 1992) is the basis that allows rice to have
other values beyond the object itself. This theory also serves as a basis for
explaining the relationship between the phenomena of consecration of rice,
consecration of works of art, and the Eucharist. By using found objects and their
materiality, this installation is the author's response to the system that allows
people to depend on rice as a cultural and political commodity, as well as the
phenomenon of its glorification. |
