UTILIZATION OF MANUAL PUMPS, BACKPACKS, AND WATER GALLONS AS INITIAL STEPS IN FIRE SPREAD PREVENTION IN MARKET AREAS

Markets in Indonesia are among the areas most vulnerable to fires, often caused by factors such as dense buildings, inadequate electrical installations, and a lack of public awareness regarding fire prevention measures. In many cases and field studies, fire-fighting equipment such as hydrants...

In many cases and field studies, fire-fighting equipment such as hydrants or fire extinguishers are often unavailable, making initial efforts to prevent the spread of fire ineffective. According to data collected over the past five years, fires in traditional markets pose a significant threat, resulting in substantial losses and endangering the safety of people who are active or living in the affected areas. Government Regulation No. 21 of 2008 on Disaster Mitigation and the Ministry of Home Affairs Instruction No. 1 of 2023 emphasize the importance of community empowerment and preparedness in disaster mitigation. However, the reality on the ground has yet to implement these regulations effectively. This research aims to design a simple tool, such as a manual pump, a backpack system, and a water gallon, as an initial step in preventing the spread of fire in market areas. The tool is designed with a focus on ease of use and low cost, making it accessible for market traders and managers. Through usage simulations, this research also seeks to integrate this tool into fire prevention efforts within market areas. text
