<p align=\"justify\">THE EFFECT OF ZINC TOXICITY ON THE MORPHOLOGY OF SOYBEAN ( GLYCINE MAX (L.) MERR. ) AND RICE ( ORYZA SATIVA L. ). The effect of zinc toxicity on the morphology of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants in hidroponic culture using modified Knops solution has been described. Young soybean plants were subjected to 0,1; 0,5; 1,5 and 5 ppm ZnCl 2 while for the young rice plants 2,5; 5 and 10 ppm ZnC1 2 was used. To study the anatomical structure, fresh hand sections were made as well as sections made with the paraffine method after fixation in FAA (formaline, acetic acid and ethyl alcohol). The amount of Zn in the shoot was analysed with an Atomic Absorption Spectroscope. Treatment of soybean plants with 5 ppm ZnCl 2 caused stunting, a reduction in the amount of leaves, leaf chlorosis and blackish brown spots at the leaf and petiole. A blackish brown substance was found in the cortical, phloem and xylem parenchyma cells in stem fibers and in the walls of tracheal elements. At the 5 ppm ZnC1 2 treatment an increased thickness of fibers wall was shown as compared with the control. The pattern of Zn concentration in the analysed plant parts was similar to the control, except for the 5 ppm ZnC1 2 treatment. In rice, the 2,5; 5 and 10 ppm ZnC1 2 treatment showed a reduction in the numberof leaves produced and chlorosis. Necrosis. Necrosis and yellowing of leaves was flund at 10 ppm ZnC1 2 . A blackish brown substance was found in the phloem and xylem parenchyma cells of the first sheath below the shoot tip and in the leaf aerenchyma. At 2,5; 5 and 10 ppm ZnC1 2 treatments, an increase of fiber cell wall thickness as compared with control, was shown. The pattern of Zn concentration in the analysed plant parts showed a difference as compared with control, at all the treatments. |
