Summary: | One of fashion’s main components is human’s ability to express themselves
through the garments they wear. This allows clothes to define certain
characteristics based on social identitiy it brings. This power to define social
identity can be concretely seen in the differences between men’s and women’s
fashion. After The French Revolution, menswear became more practical, leaving
behind ornaments, colors, and sihlouettes previously worn. There are several
theories that try to explain this phenomenon, two of them are The Great Male
Renunciation theory by J.C. Flugel, dan the theory of the separation of men and
women’s sewing guild by Anne Hollander. Aside from the differences in current
theories, menswear no longer bears the same aesthetic function as womenswear.
This paper aims to explore menswear collection design, using Avant Garde as its
concept and Howl Jenkins Pendragon from Howl’s Moving Castle as its main
inspiration to bring forth menswear with interesting ornament, color, and
silhouette |
