The J?mon period, which took place during the Neolithic era in Japan, is a
significant era in the history of Japanese culture, particularly in the development
of ceramics. J?mon ceramics, known for their distinctive shapes and patterns,
were produced without the use of a potter's wheel and were made using a
handcrafting technique, where clay was gradually shaped by rolling it layer by
layer. This production process involved mixing the clay with materials such as
mica, tin, fibers, and crushed shell to strengthen and decorate the vessels. In
addition to their function as containers for storing food, J?mon ceramics were also
adorned with cord patterns that created unique textures, setting them apart from
the finer and more elegant traditional Japanese ceramics. The aesthetics of J?mon
ceramics, although considered less harmonious than other Japanese ceramic
traditions, possess a distinct appeal as a strong and unique cultural symbol.
The findings of this study reveal that the visual appeal of J?mon ceramics can
provide a unique accent in interior spaces. The specific arrangement of J?mon
ceramics can bring a strong and unique character to certain rooms, offering a
decorative value that differentiates those spaces from other interior designs. The
use of J?mon ceramics as interior decoration products not only enhances the
visual beauty of the space but also adds depth through historical and symbolic
meaning. This research uncovers the potential of ceramic decoration with specific
motifs to create a distinct impression in a given room. |
