Description
Summary:Abstract:

Todays mobile devices offer many benefits to enterprises. By converting paper-based processes to form-based applications and extending desktop computing systems to mobile devices, products such as the Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC improve the productivity of mobile professionals while also reducing operational costs.

As organizations consider mobile enterprise solutions, a key evaluation point is security. Mobile solutions need to be safe and reliable, whether they involve personal information or confidential transactions at work. Personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones can store large amounts of data and connect to a broad spectrum of networks, making them as important and sensitive computing platforms as laptop PCs when it comes to an organizations security plan. But even if a mobile device stores only an individuals calendar and contacts, losing control over this data can pose a serious threat to an organization. Industry estimates indicate that hundreds of thousands of cell phones and handheld devices are left behind or lost every year. And as the number of smartphones and PDAs increases, the potential for information to fall into the wrong hands also increases.

This final project is about developing AUREN, an application that implements smartphone protection method. This method protects information with auto erase valuable information feature. The application will auto erase protected information if the SIM card was changed and the authentication was failed. If those conditions occur, instead of auto erase, the application will send theft information to a predefined number. The information sent includes IMEI number, name of legally owner, call log, and phone book from the thiefs SIM card. This information is very valuable for detecting the thief and the smartphone.

AUREN is a Windows Mobile based 2003 Pocket PC Phone Edition application. This application has been developed by C programming language, .NET Compact Framework, and Visual Studio 2005 Professional. This application was successfully tested both functionality and reliability with O2 XDA IIi. In addition, this project won National Student Competition LCEN 2006 held by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya. AUREN not only won the competition, but also won the Best Idea Award for the most innovative idea. For the author, AUREN is not only an ordinary final project, but also an opportunity to give something to his Institute.
