In this research, the bones and the thorns of milkfish are utilised as chitin or chitosan sources which are further used as metal absorbent from polluted drinking water. Through deproteination with NaOH and demineralization with HCl, milkfish’s thorns and bones yielded 3.59% chitin and 5.18% chitosan, respectively. Further utilization of chitin and chitosan as copper absorbent showed up to 100% of copper recovery, whilst untilization of chitosan in Cu2+ 200 ppm solution, yielded 99.70% of copper recovery. Possibility of Cu-Chitosan complex formation is supported by its IR hydroxyl peak shift from 3446.79 cm-1 to 3423.65 cm-1. text |
