This thesis discusses a model development of traffic signal coordination that is applied on a two-way street. This model of signal coordination is valid only at undersaturated traffic flow conditions and has the identical cycle lengths. The required data are: green times at each intersection, the values of early cut-off and late-start at each intersection, platoon dispersion parameters at each link, traffic flows, saturation flow rates at each intersection, average speed of traffic flow, and length at each link.
The signal coordination was carried out by assuming that the inflow and outflow platoons at each intersection had the form of a single rectangular. The platoon of vehicles dispersed when it move along the link. Delay at an intersection is expressed with the variable E (From arrival time of the tail of the platoon to the beginning of a red aspect) with a value from 0 to one cycle. The calculation algorithm is produced to obtain a value of at each intersection which gave the minimum total delay of all intersections. Offsets at each link can be calculated by using the optimum value of the variable for each intersection. This method is provided with a computer program so that with the required input data, offsets and the minimum total delay can be obtained quickly.
The introduced method differs from generally used conventional methods such as maximization of green bandwidths. This method takes into consideration several factor which conventional methods ignore such as: dispersion of platoons, turning vehicles at intersections, and the use of early cut-off and late-start facilities that result in different green times in both directions at an intersection.
