Abstract :

Series of experiments was conducted in order to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of AISI 420 stainless steel, AISI 4140 and AISI 1045 steels in NaCl solution containing dissolved CO2 and H2S. The corrosion tests were carried out in an autoclave unde...

Indonesia Theses INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/8957 Abstract :

Series of experiments was conducted in order to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of AISI 420 stainless steel, AISI 4140 and AISI 1045 steels in NaCl solution containing dissolved CO2 and H2S. The corrosion tests were carried out in an autoclave under constant pressure (20 psia) at different temperatures. Corrosion behaviour of the materials in NaCl containing dissolved CO2 and H2S were observed at 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 C and 50, 100 and 150 C respectively.

Dissolved gas was obtained by CO2 and H2S or mixed CO2 and H2S purging. The effect of the volume gas used for purging was discussed. Gas volume of 5, 10 and 20 liter were used to dissolved CO2 and H2S in NaCl solution, while 20 liter mixed gases (10 1. H2S+ 10 1. CO2) was used dissolve the mixed gases in the test solution.

Generally uniform corrosion occured on all of materials exposed in NaCl solution containing dissolved CO2 and H2S gas at all tests conditions. The corrosion rate of AISI 420 SS was significantly lower than others test materials. The corrosion rate increased with increasing temperature up to 75 C and further dicreased with increasing temperature higher than 75 C. StepWise Cracking (SWC) was observed on corroded AISI 4140 and AISI 1045 spesimens after exposed in test solutions containing dissolved mixed H2S and CO2 gases at 50, 100 and 150 C. While SWC was unlikely to occur on AISI 420 SS during the corrosion test in the same solutions.
text
