Description
Summary:Abstract :

In metal cutting process, such as turning process, one of cutting tool material widely used is High Speed Steel (HSS). The HSS material is superior, especially in its good endurance/thoughness. The worn down cutting tool could be honed such that its cutting side is resharpened. In the market, there are two kinds of HSS, i.e that of made in China and made in Germany. The objective of this research is to differentiate those kinds of HSS materials in life time and their metallurgical characteristics. Both cutting tool were tested in machining process to identify their effective life time. The machining parameters, geometrical of cutting tool and their critical wear limit were exactly alike. Then, metallurgical characteristics both cutting tool were characterized. The characteristics being characterized included their hardness, micro structures and their chemical compositions. As the result, it was found that the life time of HSS made in China and Germany are 14.6 and 21.6 minutes, respectively. Both HSS had micro structures of tempered martensitic with carbide particles. Alloying elements of both HSS are C, Cr, Mo, V and W. In HSS made in China, it was not found cobalt as alloying element, such as in that of made in Germany. The carbide in HSS material that of made in China were Cr23Fe21(W,Mo)2C12 and V4C3, while those in that of made in Germany were Fe6W6C, Cr7Mo24C19 and V2C. Generally, hardness distribution of both cutting tool in worn down area is lower than that of in the area far from worn down area. This happens because of a heating process when they were cut. It was revealed also by this research that the HSS made in China had a lot of impurities such as MnS, A1203 and MgO.
