Description
Summary:Polystyrene (PS) is one of synthetic polymers which was used in various applications. In this work, polystyrene was synthetized by polymerization of styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) inisiator at 85 degrees C. Polystyrene was approved by analysis of functional groups with FTIR. Polymerization carried out for 20 hour gave yield than that obtained in polymerization for 5 hour. This result was supported by analysis of molecular weight data which was measured using Ostwald viskometer. However, the yield of polymerization time of 5 hours and DPn of 100 was higher than that of polystyrene synthetized with DPn 500. Polystyrene obtained by polymerization with longer polymerization time and higher polymerization degree (DPn) tends to produce polymers with higher yield and longer chain. These results were supported by molecular weight analysis using viscometer. Structure and characteristic of polystyrene prepared by polymerization of styrene monomer in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as inisiator were very influenced by degree of polymerization.
