ABSTRACT:

Today, member of an organization are higher-educated and having more important role on the organizations success. They not only work for money but also for something more meaningful. This meaningful performance is influenced by individual, leader and environment.

This research is purposed to identify leadership behavior which influence a meaningful performance through the individual potencies. The potencies discussed are including competency, and characters (integrity, maturity, abundance mentality, self-confidence and perseverance). This research is also examining the effect of idealism to the influence of individual potency to a meaningful performance; and the effect of ethical environment to the influence of leadership type to individual potencies.

This research begins with carrying out a study on theoretical conception and previous research findings, so that it produces variable constructs, early research model and hypothesis. Variable constructs gained will then be studied by collecting the data through questionnaire, distributed to 13 organizations including private companies and government employees. Total amount of questioners conducted were 590, but only 389 respondents sent them back and 375 of them were valid. Data will then be analyzed by using factor analysis, so that they can yield measured variable constructs, which result in validated research hypothesis and model. Hypothesis is analyzed by using the same data and using multiple regression analysis.

Research findings are: transformational leadership gives a higher influence on assisting the follower to find a meaningful performance; transactional leadership does not develop followers character, to develop it, transactional leader should develop ethical environment; individual with character and competence will obtain a meaningful performance; individual with idealism will obtain a meaningful performance, because they not only work for money but also work for a calling.

Furthermore, for management practice, to achieve a meaningful performance, it is considered to develop transformational leadership and built an ethical environment. In recruitment, management should not only consider individual competence but also his or her character and idealism. |
