Summary: | Furfural, one of furan derivate compound which usually used as solvent in lubricant extraction from petroleum, can be produced by dehydration of pentosans from biomass. One of the rich pentosans source is corn cobs. Destilation of corn cobs mixture in 10% sulfuric acid and high concentration of NaCl, subsequent extraction of destilate using CH2Cl2, produce furfural. Sweet corn cobs and tasteless corn cobs yield 3.00% and 4.57% of furfural, respectively. Variation in concentration of NaCl in the mixture showed also yield variation of furfural in the process. |
