The residual oil saturation in pore of reservoir rock could be produced by reducing interfacial tension (IFT). Surfactant is one of chemical solution that can mobilize this residual oil by a strong reduction in the interfacial tension (IFT) between oil and rock. This method is one of The Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in which chemical substance is implemented.

Purpose of this research is to design Amott imbibition cell instrument for testing surfactant characteristics, influence various concentrations, imbibition time and heating time surfactant to oil recovery factor with spontaneous imbibition of anionic and nonionic surfactant solution.

By this imbibitions test, rate and cumulative from an oil saturated core can be observed and this results can then be analyzed to determine surfactant characteristics for various type and concentration. The results show that the oil recovery increases as the surfactant concentration increases.

In this experiment, both anionic and nonionic types of surfactant are used to see the ability differences in recovering oil and their temperature resistant for duration of temperature exposed. It was found that both types of surfactant decreased their ability in recovery oil when the surfactant was heated with longer time.
