Description
Summary:Abstract:

Research about vegetable oil to become transformer oil in Indonesia is still developed in laboratory. Two kinds of vegetable oils that have been studied are palm oil and castor oil. Palm oil and castor oil have high availability and content of good natural ester. So, they are proper to be developed. In this research, vegetable oil that used is methyl ester from castor oil.

The objectives of this study are to understand the effect of arc discharge on several dielectric parameters, relation between approach the combustible gas in the methyl ester, and the alteration group function at methyl ester. Furthermore, to understand level of biodegradability methyl ester and mineral oil which used at PLN.

The results of study show that arcing cause the alternation significantly for breakdown voltage. Meanwhile, tan and relative permittivity are not significant. Arcing also break the group function of COOR (ester) and C-H (aliphatic) from methyl ester, which are watched at FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared). The consequences are increasing the concentration of several combustible gases such us hydrogen, methane, and ethane, in the same manner as are showed by DGA (Dissolved gas analysis). The level of biodegradability methyl ester is better than mineral oil. So, methyl ester is friendly to environment then mineral oil.
