The perturbation was given by stroking the first in ternodes 10, 20 and 30 times, twice a day during a 5 day and a 10 day period. Material for anatomical observation was fixed in a 1 : 1 mixture of 50% formalin and 50% alco hol for direct measurement while other material was fixed in F.A.A., a mixture of formalin, alcohol and acetic acid and processed by the paraffin method. The amount of ethylene production was determined with a flame ionization gas chromatograph Becker 407. Results showed a decrease in the length of the first internodes caused by shorter cells of epidermis, collenchyma and cortical parenchyma. Futhermore, increase in width of the first internodes occured accompa nied by an increase in radial width of collenchyma and cortical parenchyma cells as well as phloem fibers and an in-crease in secondary xylem production due to increased cambium activity. The younger internodes of the plants did not exhibit significant difference with the controls. Fesh weight of roots and shoots of perturbated plants also did not show significant difference with, controls. Ethylene produced by the perturbated plants was significantly increased. <br /> text
