The Falling Weight Deflectometer ( FWD ) can be used to investigate deflection characteristics of these pavements and the effectiveness of load transfer at the joints. FWD output is also used to determine modulus values for the pavement layers and its foundation.

Computerized procedures available for evaluating pavement deflection characteristics are ELCON and PADAL. In the ELCON system, 2 geophones are located on one side of the FWD,one directly under the FWD and the remainder on the other side of the FWD; in the PADAL system, one geophone is located under the FWD and all of the remaining geophones are located on one sideonly.

In the investigation described in this thesis, deflection measurements were made along two sections of the concrete pavement of the Padalarang - Cileunyi toll highway. Both the ELCON and PADAL systems were used and deflection measurements were made at the centre, edge and corner of the slab and at the mid - point of the joint.

The results indicate that deflections at the edge and corner of the slab are consistently greater than at the centre of the slab. When geophones were arranged at joints in accordance with the ELCON procedure, zero load transfer was observed; arrangement of the geophones according to the

PADAL method resulted in the characteristic deflection bowl and, using Westergaards equation gave very high values of load transfer effectiveness.

Modulus value of PCC at the centre of the slab is significantly higher than that at the edge and corner. The modulus of the combined unbound base and subgrade at the edge, corner and mid - point of the joint is comparable in magnitude to the subgrade modulus at the centre of the slab.

The degree of correlation between modulus values and maximum deflection varied; virtually no correlation was found between the modulus value of the PCC slab and maximum deflection determined at the centre of the slab and at the mid point of the joint, while the correlation between subgrade modulus and maximum deflection at the centre of the slab was very high ( R = 0.96 ). Correlation of modulus values with deflection characteristics other than maximum deflection was not investigated. text
