The term binder denotes a blend of Asbuton bitumen and BFO mixed with paraffin wax. Asbuton bitumen is produced through the extraction of Asbuton. The range of addition of paraffin wax was varied from 0% up to 9% by weight of blended Asbuton bitumen, BFO and Wax, or from 0% up to 44% by weight of BFO, to try to resemble a Sumatran BFO. The results of the investigation indicated that the addition of paraffin wax increased the susceptibility of the binder. to temperature change, as shown by a decrease in the penetration index. The ability of the mixture to resist deformation, expressed in terms of Marshall stability, tended to decrease with the increase of paraffin-wax content. A significant rate of change occurred at the addition of 3% of paraffin-wax; additional paraffin-wax did not produce a significant decrease in stability. The resistance of the mix to the effect of water decreased with the addition of paraffin wax. Further more, the addition of paraffin wax decreased the skid resistance of the surface text |
