The undisturbed peat samples were taken from Pulau Rimau - Sumatra Selatan Province. The tests of the shear strength were done with the triaxial UU test. Before the shear strength test, the differen t preloading have been given to the peat sample, ie , 49 kN/m2, 98 kN/m2, 196 kN/m2, whereas the loading time duration were taken 1 days, 8 days, 15 days , 22 days, 30 days . The research conclusion shows that The maximum deviator stress is resulted at the range of the strain 12%-14%, the values of maximum deviator stress will reach at the maximu m loading and the longest time duration. The stress path diagram of the preloading peat shows: the normally consolidated condition, the range of 0 value 9.6-22.6 , and the range of C value 2.55 kN/m2-9.8 kN/m2 . Comparing with the peat of Palembang, the peat o f Akita-Japan has higher shear strength. It is shown in the stress-strain diagram. The real difference betwen the peats and the normally consolidated clay specially on the pore pressure. The begining pore pressure of peat is greater then of clay. Some graphics of the stress-strain of peat showthat the peat behavior is different from the clay. text
