Description
Summary:At Bojongsoang, algae grow wildly in rainy seasons particularly when rice-fields covered by rain-water are being utilized as fish cultivation sites by nearby farmers. The filamentous morphology of these algae cause a lot of small fishes and other water organisms being trapped and died, such that these algae has long been regarded as disturbing organism. On the other hand, the strong green color of the algae indicates that it contains various pigments such as chlorophyll and multi carotene. This research is focused on increasing economic value of these discarded algae by isolating various natural pigments such as chlorophyll, carotene, and xanthophyll, through a conventional, simple, and energy saving extraction method. Characterization using infra red spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and thin layer chromatography showed that considerably pure pigments have been obtained although not with optimum yields. Nonetheless, modification of the isolation method should still be undertaken in order to provide more effective and efficient isolation techniques.
