It contains several substances, one of them is ethyl p-metoxycinnamate. This substance was isolated from kencur by percolation using petroleum ether as the solvent. Kencur which had been dried contain ed 9.1% of ethyl pmethoxycinnamate or 1.1% of ethyl p-methoxycinnamate based on the fresh material. The p-Methoxycinnamic acid was treated with thionyl chloride at 40oC-50oC and the p-methoxycinnamoyl chloride thus obtained was reacted with dimethyl cadmium at 5oC. The nucleophylic adition-elimination reaction gave p-methoxystyryl methyl keton in 77% yield. The dimethyl cadmium which was used in this experiment was prepared by the reaction of cadmium chloride anhidrous with methyl mag nesium iodide, and the latter which was prepared from the grignard reaction of magnesium metal with methyl iodide. <br /> text
