Description
Summary:The identification of gossypol in the petroleum ether extract of the stem and stem bark of Sida rhombifolia L., (lalvaceae, has been studied by thin layer chromatography, using precoated silica gel 60 as stationary phase, mixture of hexane and ether as mobile phase, and phloroglucinol as spot mark. The result of the chromatographic identification was negative. A fluorescent alkaloid was obtained by continuos ex-traction in ethanol which was extracted by acid and the acid solution was extracted by chloroform in alkaline condition, and then isolated by preparative chromatography. The fluorescent alkaloid has a melting point of 168-169oC, the ultraviolet spectrum in methanol showed the maximum wavelength in 220 nm, 280 nm, 370 nm, the infrared spectrum gave the peaks in wavenumber 1640 cm-1, 1570 cm-1, 1550 cm-1, 1410 cm-1, 1225 cm-1 and the mass spectrum showed the peaks at M/e 232, 231, 217, 190, 116 and 89.
