Summary: | Fenitrothion is synthesized by the reaction of 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol with 0,0-dimethylchlorothiophosphate in aceton or methyl ethyl ketone, at 70 to 80oC in the presence of potassium carbonate as a condensating agent. The 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol was prepared from m-cresol by indirect nitration and was obtained in good yields (65% calculated from m-cresol). The purity of 0,0-dimethylchlorothiophosphate used as an intermediate in the preparation of organophosphorus pes ticides, is a very important factor in the obtaining of a good yield and high purity of fenitrothion. In this study, 0,0-dimethylchlorothiophosphate was prepared by reacting thiophosphorylchloride with methanol, using sodium metal, sodium hydroxide or calcium oxide as condensating agents , at various temperatures, in organic solvent or without organic solvent. Analysis of the yields were carried out by TLC scanning. Good results were obtained in the synthesis which was carried out in benzene, at -10 to 0 oC, using sodium metal or sodium hydroxide as condensating agents. The yields varied from 77,50 % to 80 % with a purity of the product ranging from 85,50 % to 92,05 %. The synthesis of fenitrothion in aceton or methyl ethyl ketone gave yields of 82,03 % and 89 %, with a purity of 80,45 % and 89,67 %. The purity was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. <br />
