Agardh (Rhodophyceae) has been carried out. Preliminary bioassay of ethanol and n-hexane extracts and their fractions has been performed using larvae of brine shrimp Artemia saLina Leach and they all showed significant activity. Two steroids were isolated from the ethanol ex-tract, one hydrocarbon and one

steroid from the n-hexane extract. One of the steroids obtained from the ethanol extract was the same as that from the n-hexane extract. From the ethyl acetate fraction one compound was isolated which was supposed to be phenolic acid. By proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography one of the steroids was identified as cholesterol and the other was supposed to be cholestane derivative. Cholesterol did not show activity on brine shrimp test. text
