Cellulose is not only use for pulp, textile (rayon and cotton), film and household equipments industry, but also for making cellulose acetate. Cellulose acetate is used as a membrane of ultra filtration, separation of methanol-tertiary metyl of butyl ester, and reverse osmosis process in waste processing of metal electroplating. This research aims to prepare cellulose acetate from waste of wood lumbermill. Besides obtaining cellulose acetate product with various applications, it is also expected to give positive contribution for senior high school especially in enrichment material of polimer subject. Rendemen of cellulose obtained from wood sawdust was 49%. The cellulose acetate can be prepared from the isolated cellulose by acetylation process using anhydride acetic acid and sulfuric acid as catalyst. The acetylation degree obtained using acetylation time of 20 and 42 hours was 44,32 % and 40,92 % respectively. The formation of cellulose acetate from isolated cellulose was proved by fungtional groups analysis using FTIR, spectroscopy which showed the presence of obsorption peak of carbonil group (C=O) and ester group (C-O) at wave numbers of 1755 cm-1 and 1238 cm-1, respectively. Thermal analysis using DTA/TGA showed that degradation temperature of cellulose and cellulose acetate are 340 degrees C and 315 degrees C respectively. text |
