Summary:The development of Internet so rapidly makes both ideas and forms of communication by steadily new tones and methods that endlessly become a single line of science development so that erodes the boundaries between communication science, social, economic, art, engineering, and other disciplines to a new media called Web. The steadily tones and methods in communicating that is mediated by the Web has shaped a representation of visual image, apparently simple but in fact contains certain very complicate meanings and intentions. The background occurring in the new media was then raised as the problem of this research, i.e., how to read the representation and linguistics of web design visual, how is a narrative and conceptual representation, and how is interactive representation of web design visual image. Based on the problem above, the main objectives of this research were to comprehend how to read the representation and grammar of visual web design, to comprehend narrative and conceptual representations and to comprehend interactive representation on visual image of web design. This research was a qualitative one, using in its analysis an critical discourse analysis (CDA) methods with an approach of social semiotics and was designed in descriptive and interpretive forms. This research used observed objects, i.e., a sample of eight web designs obtained from the nominators in a design competition of Web Bubu Award V.05. Each of the observed objects in the research sample was analyzed by using theories, particularly ones on the visual grammar in a context of social semiotics on which it was based to find out the methods of how to read a representation and to comprehend it. By this way it would be obtained inductive results and thus it was also hoped that the research results could be applied to other Web designs in general beyond this research. From this research it could be concluded that the visual representations in web design were predominantly photograph image. Few representations in form of drawing image to be actors, so that inevitably analysis was focused more on the representation in form of photograph images. Reading a visual representation of web design could be performed by seeing, observing, and mapping visual images within it to be metafunction subjects, namely, ideational and interpersonal metafunctions. This method was conducted to be capable to examine in more detail how to read processes and viewpoints and other aspects within it.
