Description
Summary:Abstract:

Research on the structure of reforested mangrove community had been done in Mayangan, Pamanukan, West Java. vegetational analysis was done by making transects from shore-line to inner land. Structural parameters as height, diameter of stem and canopy of mature stands, and density and covering of seedlings, saplings and herbs were recorded. The analysis showed that substrate characteristic and water level which were responsible to zonation, influenced growth and regeneration process of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. and Rhizophora mucronata Lamk. Outer zone (0-250 m from shoreline) with a dry substrate sand could not support the growth of A. marina well, furthermore it could not even support the growth of R. mucronata at all.

Middle zone (250-500 m from shoreline) which has a clay or loam substrate flooded by a few centimeter of water was the best zone for the growth of A. marina and R. mucronata. In addition, A. marina seedlings and saplings grow better than R. mucronata seedlings and saplings. It was also shown that in every zone, A. marina was more adaptive than R. mucronata. Due to its adaptivity, A. marina could colonize earlier than R. mucronata, even A. marina could invade the area of R. mucronata colony.

In fact shrimp or fish pond could affect the surrounding water level, substrat texture and mineral content, so that mangrove could grow better. Furthermore, it was pro-posed to use a model of an ecological approach for doing a reforestation project. It was also proposed to make a 400 m green belt for mangrove in this area and to apply the pattern of centered shrimp or fish pond as a substitute pattern of a moat shrimp or fish pond that has been used at present.
