Summary:Abstract: <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Phytochemical study of alang-alang rhizomes, Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeusch. var. major (Nees) C.E. Hubb. (Gramineae), was carried out. Sitosterol and stigmasterol in the n-hexane extract were isolated by vacuum liquid chromatography, followed by recrystallisatiom in petroleum ether. Identification was done by thin layer chromatography, ultraviolet and infrared spectrophotometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. In the n-hexane extract were also detected a triterpenoid and a bright blue fluorescence compound which gave a positive reaction with Dragendorff's reagent. Sucrose was found in the methanol extract and was identified by thin layer chromatography, color reaction with Molisch reagent, osazone formation and infrared spectrophotometry. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Identification of free phenolic acids and those obtained after acid and alkaline hydrolysis of the Methanol ex-tract by two dimensional paper chromatography and ultra-violet spectrophotometry showed the presence of caffeic-, vanillic-, p-coumaric-, p-hydroxybenzoic- and ferulic acid.
