Description
Summary:ABSTRACT:

In regional development, Southern Bandung functions as supporting Bandung City, mainly as agricultural product suplier. However in agricultural activities, Southern Bandung faces some problems and has some policies that need a suitable land use guideline. They are environmental damage, low productivity, unsuitable behaviour of farmers on use the agricultural land and government policies about agricultural intensification and diversification. All of this is the background of this study. This study aimed to know land suitability on Soouthern Bandung for agricultural commodities development which was based on physical, economic and social aspect.

Economic, physical and social analysis were done in this study. The methods of each analysis respectively were seeing the profit and market prices, comparing physical land condition to the criterion of the commodities and descriptive analysis of primary data.

The commodities, which were elected to be developed in Sothern Bandung, were sweet potato, garlic, red chili, long bean, tomatoes, rose, sedap malam, ginger, paprika and kapri bean. It was known that in Sothem Bandung, only suitable to develop eight of the ten commodities, with class of land suitability S2 (suitable enough) and S3 (suitable marginal). Garlic and kapri bean were not suitable at all to be developed in study area. Based on social analysis, it was known that the farmers were less paying attention to the land physical condition, most of the farmers had subsisten motives (38 %) and didnt have willingness to change the planted commodities (60 %).

Class of land suitability can be increased by making of drain sewer, terrace and dam to control the flood, land cultivation, enrichment of organic matter, improvement of planting pattern and techniques and using green house on agricultural activities. To keep the quality of the environment, increase the farmers welfare and Southern Bandung can do its function as agricultural product supplier, the (local) government can rearrange land ownership, increase the farmers acces to the economic resource and increase quality of agricultural training.
