Description
Summary:Heat transfer in a latent thermal storage during melting process heated by a surface of constant temprature has been studied experimentally and analitically. The latent thermal storage is in the form of heat exchanger of the shell-andtube type and in horizontal position. Analitical analysis based on heat conduction involving the effect of different densities between the solid and the liquid phase caused by phase change process has been carried out. The heat storage medium used is paraffin wax which fills the space between the shell and the tube. Experimental results show that the reaching time of the melting temperature for the points located at the same radius depend on the angle position from vertical axis of the pipe cross section. The points located at the vertical axis arrive faster at the melting temperature than the points at 45° from that axis. Experimental results deviate from analitical results which indicate that the reaching time of the melting temperature at the particular point, the value of the experimental result is smaller than <br /> the analitical result. The two facts mentioned above indicated that during the melting process natural convection occurs in the liquid phase and supportA,the melting at the upper side of the pipe.
