SECONDARY METABOLITES FROM THE STEM BARK AND THE HEARTWOOD OF FICUS BENJAMINA L.

Abstract:

The plant of Ficus (Moraceae) has been known as a source of phenolic compounds. The research conducted on Ficus benjamina L. showed that the stem bark yielded psoralen (furanocoumarin derivative) and f-sitosterol (steroi...

The research conducted on Ficus benjamina L. showed that the stem bark yielded psoralen (furanocoumarin derivative) and f-sitosterol (steroid derivative). While, three aromatic compounds i..e. FB-2, FB-3, and FB-4 in which FB-2 and FB-4 are phenolics from the heartwood of the same species. The structures of these compounds were determined based on the spectroscopic data, including UV, IR, and 1H-NMR spectra as well as by comparing with data reported. The toxicity of psoralen was examined against Artemia salina shrimp (brine shrimp lethality test) which showed that it has a moderate toxicity with LC50 250 myu g/mL. text
