Abstract: <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Current town planning tends to remove old historical artifacts that characterized a town. Such tendency is caused by town planning policy that does not support the preservation of the original town characteristics. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The essence of a town is shown by its local characteristics which are significantly influenced by historical factors. Preservation of a heritage area of the town will ensure future generation of unique historical town morphology. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The unique characteristics of Pekanbaru town can be maintained through preservation of the heritage area. The Senapelan area is the origin of Pekanbaru; it has historical objects and presently under threat with the destruction of old heritage buildings to be replaced by new buildings that do not show local characteristics. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The preservation of Senapelan area focuses on constantly managing the complex functions of the area, and protecting environmental condition and heritage buildings which reflect original characters and historical value of the town.
