Description
Summary:Durability of concrete and mortar in building construction must be considered, especially for building exposed to water, such as : swiming pool, dam, water line and foundation of building, etc. In the long term, water attack can be deleterious concrete or mortar. Some method had been developed to reduce or prevent water attack, keeping the attack as minimum as possible. Recently, a new method have been developed. It uses the sodium acetate-water solution. This method proves to be effective in preventing water attack.<p>In this research, the effect of sodium acetate was tested using the water absorption method on mortar samples. The sodium acetate solutions of compositions 10%,15% and 20% were added to cement then mixed together with sand. The curing was performed in closed packing. After the mortar sample hardened, the water absoption of mortar was tested by capillary absorption method. The result indicates that water absoption decreases and the compressive strengh increases for samples containing sodium acetate. Higher composition of sodium acetate gives lower water aborption and higher compressive strengh. The optimal composition is given by samples containing 20% sodium acetate in the solution.
