In the mean time, the use of MoO3 in several research has not yet produced a stable impregnating solution. Moreover, the catalyst that has been produced by this method also can not reach more that 13%-w composition of Mo. On the other hand the catalyst support that has always been used is the γ-Al2O3 commercial support which is also relatively high in price. Several alternatives of raw material of γ-Al2O3 such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and bauxite has been used in research but they still come up with the poor results of surface area which are lower that 200 m2/g. According to some literatures one of the γ-Al2O3 raw material that can produce more than 200 m2/g of surface area is Catapal B (high purity ammonium monohydrate, AlOOH).

Thus, the main purposes of this research is firstly, to found an appropiate method of preparing a stable impregnating solution with the use of MoO3 as the source of Mo active phase that will give a higher Mo composition of catalyst. Secondly, to found a good formulation as well as method of making γ-Al2O3 catalyst support from Catapal B in order to produce support with high surface area (more than 200 m2/g).

This research is divided into four main steps. The first step is the preparation of impregnating solution until its stability can be well established. Secondly, the preparation of γ-Al2O3 catalyst support derived from Catapal B. The third step is the sythesis of hydrotreating catalyst and finally the last step is to characterize the physical properties of the support as well as the final catalyst. The result showed that the appropriate formulation to make a stable impregnating solution is found to be the ratio NiNO3/MoO3 = 0,95 and NH3/MoO3 = 4 ml/g and the right consentration of HNO3 is found to be 0,225 M with volume ratio = 0,7 ml/g-Catapal B. The characterization of support also has resulted in 226 m2/g of surface area and 0,680 cc/g of pore volume. text
