Summary: |
NIST Net is a network emulator package. NIST Net provides capability to do dynamic network characteristics research, i.e. delay, jitter, bandwidth limitation, congestion, loss and duplication.

NIST Net works on a Linux-based Personal Computer (PC) configured as a router which routes few subnets. Packets traffic characteristic of few sub Networks can be regulated as it is needed. NIST Net has an X-window graphical interface which makes configuring and monitoring Network characteristic comfortable in local router computer. However, remotely configuring NIST Net becomes a problem since remote configuration must be done in Command Line.

This report describes a web-based graphical user interface development for remotely monitoring and configuring NIST Net. The web-based graphical interface was developed on the same hardware where NIST Net Emulator was installed. The web-based graphical interface was developed using PHP and HTML programming. Thus, the development of the web-based graphical interface didn't require any modification for the original NIST NET software.

The NIST Net remote configuration graphical user interface has a user authentication system. The authentication system was developed to restrict access of the graphical interface to authorized people. The authorized person can remotely configure or monitor characteristics of networks under NIST Net router by using the web-based graphical interface.

This Final Year Project was done in three major steps. The first major step of the project is doing literature study for gathering enough knowledge as basis to develop a web-based graphical interface system for remotely monitoring and configuring NIST Net. The second step is developing the web-based graphical interface system. The final step is testing the web-based interface system to find out that the requirements for results of the project are fulfilled. |
