Summary: | Lubrication is an important factor in diesel engine. Since the beginning of its use until now, lubrication always be a main concern in diesel engine technology design. Diesel engine technology nowadays are expected can fulfill the aspect of low fuel consumption, higher efficiency, and lower the air pollution level as low as possible. Many of the moving component in diesel engine cause a wear in many component. Performance and the age of diesel engine will be decrease because of the excessive wear. Lubricant will give a protection to the component from this excessive wear. This research objective is to developed diesel engine lubricant product that can be used for 10.000 km operation and to see the influence of lubricant on diesel engine component and evaluate the change in lubricant quality after the road test. The method of this research is a road test using diesel engine vehicle for 3 x 10.000 km distance refer to ASTM D-5500 standard. The parameter of this test are vehicle average velocity, noise level of engine chamber, vehicle acceleration, performance of vehicle, the change of the lubricant properties, change in component mass, change in component dimension, change in component surface roughness, and the damage of component through visual evaluation.<p>After the test, the average kinematic viscosity decrease for 10.07%, change in mass, dimension, and surface roughness is between 0.01%-2%, the engine power decrease for 14.11%, engine torque decrease fro 6.84%, lubricant consumption is 13.27%, and the average fuel consumption is 15.95 km/litre. This change in parameter was happened because of lubricant degradation so friction between component will increase. This friction will cause component wear that can be seen from the visual evaluation. Visual evaluation shows the component damage because of friction is increase after the test. This damage will decrease the performance of vehicle. In general, the change in parameter is still on the allowed limit, so after the 3 x 10.000 km road test, the developed lubricant can fulfill the specification of API Service CF-4. |
