This crisis has turned rise oil price and forced Indonesia to import oil. Alternative fuels to solve the scarcity problem are therefore a serious challenge needed to be solved. One among the various alternative fuels is biodiesel.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The purpose of the research is to find out the most efficient method to produce ethyl ester biodiesel. The research is mainly focused on transesterification with oleic CPO's and ethanol. The research work was accomplished through two methods, one-step transesterification and two-step transesterification; three variation of reaction time; and three variation of ethanol amount. Production capability, the convertion, was measured by the value of total glycerol and free grycerol at the end of reaction.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The research proved that ethyl ester production is harder and more complicated the methyl ester production. The research demonstrated that biodiesel produced form the two-step transesterification did not meet the qualification of biodiesel standard SNI-04-7182-2006. Meanwhile within the one-step transesterification, at the reaction time of 5 and 6 hours with ethanol amount of 2-2,5 times of stoichiometry, the qualified product can be obtained. Due to the slight differences between both products, the most optimum reaction configuration is 5 hours of one-step transesterification with ethanol amount of 2 times of stoichiometry. text |
