In order to attract as many readers as possible, online newspaper should pay attention to the textual elements of the news text thus it can deliver the meaning perfectly. The goal of the study is to reveal the types of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion that is mostly used in The Jakarta Post news articles. The analysis on cohesive devices is intended to know the flow of the text which might later affect the readers’ point of view on the issue. The researcher examined the news articles which are published during September 2019 about the approach and settlement regarding the Papuan riots caused by the racist attack towards Papuan students in Surabaya by using the theory of cohesion by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Renkema (2004). The study reveals that all types of cohesive devices occur in four news articles which have 3207 words in total. Conjunction is the most dominant type of grammatical cohesion with 26.28% occurrences, whereas reiteration is the most dominant to appear among the other lexical cohesion types with 41.54% occurrences. The result shows that the use of conjunction helps the news writers in creating the flow of the news articles whereas the reiteration helps in putting emphasis on what topics the news articles talk about. 2020 Thesis NonPeerReviewed text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/1/1.%20COVER%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/2/2.%20TABLE%20OF%20CONTENTS.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/3/3.%20ABSTRACT.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/4/4.%20CHAPTER%201%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/5/5.%20CHAPTER%202%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/6/6.%20CHAPTER%203%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/7/7.%20CHAPTER%204%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/8/8.%20CHAPTER%205%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/9/9.%20REFERENCES.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/10/10.%20APPENDICES.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/11/152-GESA%20SAPTYANING%20AMBARWATI-121611233095-FORM%20EMBARGO%20-%20Gesa%20Saptyaning%20Ambarwati.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102746/12/152-GESA%20SAPTYANING%20AMBARWATI-121611233095-FORM%20KESEDIAAN%20-%20Gesa%20Saptyaning%20Ambarwati.pdf GESA SAPTYANING AMBARWATI (2020) COHESIVE DEVICES IN THE JAKARTA POST NEWS ARTICLES ABOUT PAPUAN RIOTS SETTLEMENT IN SEPTEMBER 2019.
