The first analysis phase is the identification of American values, reflected from the actions of the characters in The Lightning Thief, The Red Pyramid, and The Sword of Summer. The identification then shows the existence of repetitive functions related to American values performed by characters that are in adolescent stage. The second stage of analysis is to make a general formula of the functions found in the order in which they appear in the story. This study found that there are eight functions associated with American adolescence‟s efforts to live American values, namely separation, secrecy, equal treatment, encounter, change, self-esteem enchanment, planning, achievement, and confrontation.
