This study covers about linguistic impoliteness strategies used by Anne Robinson in a BBC game show The Weakest Link. The Weakest Link is known as one of the most popular game show in the UK which broadcasted on BBC Two and BBC One channel. It is known as a very controversial television quiz because of the host, Anne Robinson, always appears to be rude towards the participants in the game show. This study is a qualitative study. The data in this study are the excepts of conversation which are produced by Anne Robinson containing impoliteness strategy in a game show. The
utterances are analyzed using Impoliteness Strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996) and Function of Impoliteness also proposed by Culpeper (2011). The result of this study
shows the impoliteness strategies which used are bald-on record, positive impoliteness, and negative impoliteness, which found in 21 utterances. This study also found that there are three functions of Impoliteness strategies in Anne Robinson’s utterances which are affective function, Coercive function, and Entertaining Function. that impoliteness is influenced by the social aspect of the speaker and Impoliteness is not only used to thretened or frightened, but it can also be used to express someone’s emotion or feelings. |
