Description
Summary:This study discusses discrimination against women which results in them being unable to get their rights. Gender discrimination is clearly illustrated in the novel Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 which is examined in this study. The novel’s narrative is constructed in forms of discrimination against women as well as the regulations and patriarchal culture viewed from psychological, political, economic, and physical perspectives. The Feminine Mystique theory is used in this research. The theory expresses the linkage of gender equality and the elimination of discrimination, especially toward women in social, economic, political, physical and psychological features which are related to the setting of the novel. This study employed qualitative methods to identify the discrimination against women in the novel specifically. The results of this study show the resistance of female characters in the novel through an understanding of the resistance of Feminine Mistique built within the hearts and thoughts of each woman. The gender discrimination that occurs in the novel illustrates the problems along with various ways of resistance executed by its each character. The level of awareness, solidarity, and critical traits of the characters regarding what happened to them will be challenged as form of feminist resistance in the novel.
