Summary:This study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of complementary therapy a mixture of kencur rhizome extract (Kaempferia galanga L.) with glucosamine and chondroitin in vivo using carrageenan induced paw edema method. This is an experimental study that uses 28 healthy male wistar rats which were randomized into 7 groups. 2 control groups receiving negative control (CMC-Na 1%) and positive control (ibuprofen 36 mg/kg BW). 5 groups receiving glucosamine chondroitin, kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) 1200 mg/kg BW, a mixture of glucosamine, chondroitin and kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) 600 mg/kg BW, 900 mg/kg BW, 1200 mg/kg BW. The suspension test material was given orally to each rat as much as 2 ml/200 g BW. 1 hour later, 1% carrageenan was injected to the rat's paw 0.1 ml/200 g BW to induce edema. The volume edema of the rat's paw was measured every 1 hour for 5 hours and then the percentage inhibition of paw edema was analyzed. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in percentage of edema inhibition only between negative control group with a mixture of glucosamine, chondroitin and kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) 900 mg/kg BW at 3 hours, which means it has a different anti-inflammatory activity with negative control but same with positive control. It can be concluded that the complementary therapy a mixture of kencur extract (Kaempferia galanga L.) 900 mg/kg BW with glucosamine and chondroitin has anti-inflammatory activity in vivo.
