Summary:This study attempts to discuss the portrayal of white and black people in novel The House Gun. It portrays the character of white and black people. The issue that will be discussed in this study is the portrayal of white and black people. The character of white in the novel is Duncan Peter Lindgard, Carl Jespersen, Harald Lindgard and Claudia Lingard. As the character of black that will be analyzed is Hamilton Motsamai. Close reading technique is used to give brief analysis toward the problem found in the work by elaborating dialogues and events in the novel and applies New Criticism especially intrinsic approach. Thus, it is limited in setting, plot, and character. By applying the theory, the study finds that there is flat and round characters. Flat characters are Harald Lindgard and Hamilton Motsamai, and round characters are Duncan Peter Lindgard, Carl Jespersen, and Claudia Lindgard. The portrayals of Duncan are criminal, helpful, hard worker, and good person. Herald is religious person, not racist, care to his son, and be responsible. Claudia is good mother, not racist person, and she underestimates to black. Carl is homosexual, bad friend, and gun saver. Motsamai is great lawyer, friendly, and smart.
