According to Freudian Psychoanalysis, anxiety happens when the ego cannot deal with the demands of people desires, the constraints of reality and their own moral standards. Anxiety acts as a signal to the ego that things are not going right. As the result, some actions also occur to defense the pain and punishment that will be received and is known as defense mechanisms. This psychological phenomenon is an issue that occurs in a science fiction entitled Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. This novel will be as the primary data in this literary research. Using the descriptive and qualitative analysis, this research focuses in the main character, Charlie Gordon and will find out his personality problems especially about anxiety and defense mechanisms. This research expects that information about Charlie’s anxiety and his defense mechanisms will be described clearly with Freudian Psychoanalysis theory. It will reveal one by one the traumatiuc past events of Charlie Gordon in this novel, that make the appearance of his anxiety, involved neurotic anxiety and realistic anxiety, and some actions that he does as the defense of anxiety, such as: repression, displacement, regression, alienation, and also fantasy by the appearance of imagination character.
