Summary: | Academic writing becomes (more and more) complex as the level of studies increases. The use of noun phrases (NPs) in academic writing is significantly important because it plays an important thematic role and also has the highest frequency in a text. As the writing complexity is increasing, the complexity of NPs is also increasing as well. Focusing on the NPs, this research uses the theory of NPs from Brinton (20 l 0) who had divided NPs into nine types. The theory is used to determine the types of NPs in the abstracts of undergraduate theses produced by two groups of students who take diflerent field of studies at the same
level. Those two groups are linguistics and literature students of Universitas Airlangga. The noun phrases in both groups are calculated and analyzed using Brinton's expansion of noun phrases. The findings show that Brinton's theory is able to be applied in the abstracts of linguistics and literature. Moreover, the writer found the noun phrases which are not included in Brinton's noun phrases because they do not contain Det in their structures. From these findings, the writer suggests to increase noun phrases teaching in the classroom to improve the ability of using noun phrases in order to be able to produce good abstracts. |
