Summary: | Background. Oral Candidiasis (OC) is a common opportunistic oral mycotic infection. OC pathogenicity is caused by overgrowth of Candida albicans. Candida albicans is a comensal organism residing in the oral cavity in a majority of healthy person. Transformation from a state of commensalism to that of a pathogen related to local systemic factor. Temulawak (Curcuma xantho"hiza roxb.) is an Indonesian medicinal herb that has an antifungal effect by it's active content named xanthorrhizol. Purpose. The aim of this study was to account inhibition effect of temulawak extract towards Candida albicans 's growth. Methods. This research used culture stock of Candida albicans that was incubated in sabouraud dextrose medium.Temulawak extract was diluted into the different concentration: 1%, 2%, 4%, and 8%. The extract was placed into the Candida albicans 's colony, therefore it was planted into Sabouraud dextrose liquid After 24 hours incubation with a petridish in a 3'?C temperature, the colony count would be measured and compared with control (+) and control (-). After the first experimental was done, this research used the same method in another concentration, that was got from dilution series, therefore 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125%, and 1 ,5%. From that second experimental, the range of concentration that used to be the third experimental was between 50% until 100%. And this research used temulawak extract in any concentration: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% as the third experimental with the same method. Results. Temulawak extract in any concentration : 1%, 2%, 4%, and 8% did not effective to inhibit the growthness of Candida albicans. It could inhibit the growth in 80% concentration of temulawak extract as a minimum inhibitory concentration. Conclusion : Temulawak extract has an inhibition effect particulary in a concentration of 80% towards growth of Candida albicans based on the certain storaged and rhizome age. |
