Description
Summary:Bone strength is determined by its density and thickness. During thedevelopment, bone becomes longer and thicker, and this process may result in change of bone mass. Exercise is one of physical stressors, that may affect bone tissue, in addition to its role in preventing osteoporosis. However, the influence of interval anaerobic exercise on bone density and thickness has never been disclosed. This study was aimed to atte~t that interval anaerobic exercise for 4 and 8 weeks might increase bone density and thickness. This study used separate sImple pre-test post-test contf<.'! group de;;ign. Experimental animal involved were male Wister strain Rattus norwegicus mice aged 2 months. Samples were collected inrandom, and sample size of each group was 10. The independent variable was interval anaerobic exercise, and the dependent variables were bone density and thickness. The samples were divided into 5 groups, i,e., pre-test group, 4 weeks control group (G1), 8 weeks control group (G2), 4 weeks treatment group (G3), and 8 weeks treatment group (G4). Bone density was measured~y means ofilltra ~<mnd DBM Sonic 1200 at right femoral diaphysis 4 times by pushing the button on the monitor, while bone thickness was measured using planimeter. Results analysis showed that interval anaerobic exercise for 4 weeks resulted in the incre<lSe 0f bone density (p = 0.001) and bone thickness (p = 0.000). The exercise for 8 weeks revealed increase in bone density in control group (p = 0.000) as well as in treatment group (p = 0.000), but it also resulted in decreased bone thickness in control (p = 0 .077) and treatment group (p = 0 .007). As a conclusion, anaerobic exercise for 4 weeks increases bone density and thickness, while anaerobic exercise for 8 weeks increases bone density, but not bone thickness.
