Summary:It seems unfair to ask children what a word means, but by asking them what a word means, we try to enter the mind of the child to investigate their concept of the word given. In this study the writer tries tc· find out how 7-year-old children define some simple adjectives as we know l,iat the development of acquiring the meaning of adjective is different and much more difficult from the way we acquire the meanings of nouns and verbs. It is because adjectives do not refer to anything in this world and the development of the meaning of adjective understanding really needs higher level of thinking and sensing than the understanding of the meanings of nouns and verbs. The writer hopes the reader will have a clear description about children's language abilities to define the meaning or simple adjective that lead them to view the depth of children's understanding to the meaning of the adjectives based on their competencies parallel the development stages of intellectual maturity.
