Summary: | Concerning on the discussion of Nelson Francis, there are two components of a structure of modifications. They are head and modifier. This research uses syntax theory to analyse modifiers. It is to ex~rnine the use of modifiers in
authentic writing by describing the kinds of modifiers, what the modifiers modify in this case the heads, and their positions. The writer r.ounts the frequency of the
occurrence of the modifiers to find out which types of these are mostly found in the source of data. The writer takes three different selected articles in Newsweek magazine as her source of data. The first is about technology, the second is about society and the arts, and the last is politics. The data from the three articles are analyzed based on Nelson Francis' s theory of structure of modification. She studies different topics of the selected articles thoroughly. To collect the data, the writer uses qualitative approach. She does not start with a hypothesis and does not make any generalisation. |
