This study aims to investigate the opening sequences in Indonesian mobile phone conversation. This study uses Schegloffs (1986) research of four opening sequences. Mainly there are four opening sequences that always appear in American telephone conversations. The writer wanted to know whether the pattern of opening sequence in Indonesian mobile phone conversations is similar to the one in American English. Since the Schegloffs data were landline phone conversation, therefore the writer also wanted to see the different pattern based on the different media; landline and mobile phone. The writer limited her research by looking at the social relationship of two parties, caller and receiver. Conversation Analysis method is applied in this study because describes the structure of opening sequences in mobile phone conversations. The data was taken from the writer friend's mobile phone starting from October 2009 up to May 2010. The study found that in Indonesian mobile phone conversation mostly contained only one sequence from four sequences. All of conversations are opened by summons/answer sequence but five of them contained mechanical summons/answer which did not appear in the transcription. Three conversations opened by identification sequence and two conversations opened by greeting sequences. There was no 'howareyou' sequence appeared in the conversations. It is different to the American telephone conversation which usually has four opening sequences in one conversation.
